Female Boxer Calls for Death Penalty After Toddler’s Tragic Stabbing in Ohio

In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the community of North Olmsted, Ohio, a three-year-old boy was fatally stabbed, leading to widespread outrage and calls for severe punishment. Among the voices demanding justice is 33-year-old Mexican-American female boxer Sulem Urbina, who has fervently advocated for the death penalty for the suspect involved.

Horrific Incident in North Olmsted

On Monday, tragedy struck outside a Giant Eagle supermarket in North Olmsted, a suburb of Cleveland. According to police reports, 32-year-old Bionca Ellis attacked and stabbed three-year-old Julian Wood and his mother, Margot Wood, in an unprovoked act of violence. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the young victim the following day.

Sulem Urbina’s Outcry for Justice

Urbina, a former WBA flyweight contender, took to social media to express her horror and demand the harshest possible penalty for Ellis. In a tweet that quickly gained traction, Urbina wrote, “Despicable. Death penalty now,” reflecting the widespread anger and grief felt by many.

“We were heartbroken to learn of the passing of the young victim in yesterday’s senseless act of violence. Our thoughts are with the child, his mother and their loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time”, Giant Eagle’s statement read.

Legal Context and Governor’s Suspension

It’s important to note that while Ohio does have the death penalty, Governor Mike DeWine has indefinitely suspended all executions. This moratorium will remain in place until the Ohio General Assembly can decide on a suitable alternative to lethal injection, which has faced significant legal and ethical challenges.

They further added, “We thank the North Olmsted Mayor’s Office and the community’s first responders for their unwavering commitment. We are providing counseling services to our store teams and are ready to support our North Olmsted neighbors how

Community and Law Enforcement Response

The North Olmsted Police Department received multiple 911 calls around 3 p.m. on Monday, reporting the brutal attack in the grocery store’s parking lot. Officers arrived swiftly, providing immediate first aid to both victims and apprehending Ellis at the scene. Julian Wood tragically succumbed to his injuries, while his mother is recovering in a local hospital.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Ellis has been charged with aggravated murder, with additional charges pending as the investigation continues. She is currently held without bond at the North Olmsted City Jail and will be arraigned at the Rocky River Municipal Court, where legal proceedings will commence.

Giant Eagle’s Official Statement

In the wake of this devastating incident, Giant Eagle released an official statement expressing their sorrow and support for the victims and their families. “We were heartbroken to learn of the passing of the young victim in yesterday’s senseless act of violence. Our thoughts are with the child, his mother, and their loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time,” the statement read. The supermarket chain also commended the swift response from local authorities and offered counseling services to their employees.

Community Mourning and Urbina’s Advocacy

Urbina’s impassioned plea for capital punishment highlights the depth of public outrage. Her call for justice resonates with many who are grappling with the senseless nature of this crime. As the community mourns Julian Wood’s loss, they rally behind Urbina’s demand for the ultimate penalty for Ellis.

This tragic event has not only rocked the North Olmsted community but also drawn national attention, with figures like Urbina using their platform to demand justice. As the legal process unfolds, the community and the nation await the outcomes, hoping for a resolution that brings some measure of justice to this heartbreaking case.
