Boxing World Divided: Deontay Wilder’s Brutal Honesty Ignites Debate Over Tyson’s Fate
The boxing world is buzzing with concern and controversy as heavyweight legend Mike Tyson gears up to face off against YouTube sensation-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Amidst the hype and anticipation surrounding the much-anticipated bout, fellow heavyweight Deontay Wilder has raised alarm bells, expressing grave concerns for Tyson’s safety.
In a candid interview with James Bisson from Sportsbook Review, Wilder pulled no punches, expressing apprehension over the decision to sanction the fight between Tyson and Paul as a professional boxing event. With Tyson approaching 58 years of age and Paul a youthful 27, the vast age gap between the two fighters has sparked fears of potential harm befalling the boxing icon.
“God forbid he gets hurt. There’s lots of examples where guys have been hit into a coma. He’s too old for this,” Wilder cautioned, highlighting the inherent risks associated with Tyson stepping back into the ring after a two-decade hiatus from professional boxing.
“I think it’s bad the commission has licensed Mike because he hasn’t been active in 20 years,” said Wilder.
Wilder said, “God forbid he gets hurt. There’s lots of examples where guys have been hit into a coma. He’s too old for this.” Elaborating further on his point, the hardest puncher in boxing said, “No one gives a f*** about Mike, because if they did they wouldn’t sanction the fight… I don’t want the last thing I remember of him to be him getting knocked out by a Youtuber.”
Shalom said, “As long as it’s clear that it’s not real boxing, I think definitely. It’s a spectacle, it’s a form of entertainment.” He further added, “There’s no way you can justify a 57-year-old fighting in a professional fight. For me, that’s where things need to be clear, and then the sport doesn’t suffer. I think it does suffer if boxing is seen as a circus. But as a form of entertainment, people can do what they want.”
The concern expressed by Wilder has reignited debate within the boxing community, with many questioning the wisdom of pitting an aging legend against a younger, less experienced opponent. While Tyson’s illustrious career and ferocious reputation precede him, doubts linger over his ability to withstand the rigors of professional boxing at this stage in his life.
Adding fuel to the fire, English promoter Benjamin Shalom has condemned the Tyson-Paul bout as a “circus,” casting doubt on its legitimacy as a true sporting event. While acknowledging its potential as a spectacle and form of entertainment, Shalom emphasized the need for clarity regarding the nature of the fight to prevent boxing from being perceived as a mere sideshow.
As the countdown to the showdown between Tyson and Paul continues, the boxing world remains divided, with opinions ranging from unwavering confidence in Tyson’s ability to concerns for his well-being. With the stakes higher than ever and the spotlight shining brightly on the impending clash, the fate of one of boxing’s most iconic figures hangs in the balance.
